You can only reach the villages of Rodanthe,
Waves and Salvo, North Carolina using NC Rt. 12 from either of two directions.
-
From the north you cross the Oregon Inlet
Bridge and follow Rt. 12 into Rodanthe.
-
From the south you can cross to Hatteras
Island using the Ocracoke ferry and then
proceed driving north up Hatteras Island on
Rt. 12 to Salvo.
Visitor Guide Note: It is always a good idea
before heading out to any location on Hatteras
Island to first check the weather that is
expected while you are arriving. High winds (30
mph or more) especially during high tides from
the Northeast or East currently tend to cause
highway to overwash from the ocean on Rt. 12 in several locations.
Please be aware, this overwash is a mixture of
saltwater and sand. Even if this standing water seems
easily passable, vehicles plowing
through it can get sand into places on a car or truck that can damage
seals and brakes. Also, the corrosive effects of
ocean saltwater cannot be understated. We have a
joke here. "Even plastic corrodes on
Hatteras Island!" Please always
travel through all overwash areas at the slowest
possible "no wake" speed.
